GoodLife: Peninsula Style, Issue 40, Page 022 (transcription)

22 good life, june - july, august 2011 During winter on the Peninsula we can be forgiven for wanting to stay warm in the comfort of our own homes the winds off Bass Strait can be particularly unforgiving when combined with rain and really offer us no incentive to get outdoors.
However, winter is also the time of year when the Peninsula offers us the opportunity to take small voyages of discovery the summer crowds have left us, but all the wonderful things that bring people to the Peninsula each year remain, so why not get out and see what you can find.
If you really would prefer to stay indoors, perhaps a short trip to a welcoming cellar door or winery would suit.
Many offer warm dining experiences, often by open fires, featuring the best of local produce in season.
It is a most civilised way to enjoy some of the best the Peninsula has to offer, sipping a fine vintage wine while gazing out at a winter landscape from a comfortable dining space.
There are so many different wineries, restaurants and cellar doors to choose from that you could visit one each weekend for the whole winter and not end up at the same place twice.
Even though it s cold outside, there is much to be gained from wrapping up and venturing outdoors - the view from Arthur s Seat is just as spectacular in winter as in summer, and our many beaches are strewn with treasure thrown onshore by winter winds and waves although remember to leave them where you found them .
Spending an afternoon or even an hour or two walking on the shore can give you not only a blast of fresh air, but other experiences as well.
Recently, my husband, daughter and I were treated to the sight of two dolphins playing close to shore at Merricks Beach with not a soul around to share the moment with us.
Taking a walk through Point Nepean park or along the the shoreline can be a bit bracing so, if you d like to warm up, a trip to the recently expanded Peninsula Hot Springs is a lovely way to end the day.
Evening bathing in the variety of hot pools is available most nights as well as a host of different treatments and indulgences inspired by bathing practices around the world if you haven t been there before, now is a great time of year to visit.
A personal favourite activity of mine is poking through antique markets to find hidden treasure and, with several antique centres at Tyabb, I m spoilt for choice.
It s a perfect way to spend a rainy winter afternoon who knows what you might find tucked away in the many stalls and sheds.
The Peninsula also offers opportunities for journey by car and by train.
The Mornington Railway runs on the first three Sundays of each month, while our winding roads that lead through the hinterland reveal hidden landscapes and ocean glimpses all year round.
Why not treat yourself to a night or weekend staying at one of the many small hotels dotted throughout our countryside even though you may not be far from home it s a chance to experience a different aspect of the Peninsula.
So with summer behind us and the crowds long gone, winter is a wonderful time to discover our local landscape.
You don t have to go far to discover something new whether it s a gallery you ve never visited, a new winery or even a little beach view all to yourself, our Peninsula offers us options all year round.
