The Dromana College Cycling Program teaches students valuable skills and knowledge about cycling and racing, improves student levels of fitness and engenders positive experiences.
The students undergo an extensive training regime tailored to their individual needs and are required to maintain a detailed training log.
The students also study the different dietary requirements for training, endurance and racing.
Other areas of study include the human body with regards to growth, muscle development and injury prevention, navigational skills, environmental awareness and riding skills.
This year the Cycling Team, comprising of students in Years 7 10, have participated in a half day cycling program and undertaken weekly sessions involving road cycling, mountain biking and the preparation involved for races in these forms of cycling.
On Sunday 22 July 2012 Dromana College co-hosted the Victorian Schools Cycling Championships VSCC Mountain Bike series East Zone Final with the Red Hill Riders MTB Club.
The final was raced on the newly constructed Hillview Trail on the Dromana College site and was designed and built by the students of the college in conjunction with members of the Red Hill Riders.
Vince Latham from Hillview Quarries and Robin Tffany from Ridesafe, as part of the Mornington Peninsula Shire, have been outstanding supporters of the development of the signed recreation trail at Dromana College.
Students from various schools from across the state had the opportunity to compete in a fun and safe environment on the 2.4 km trail.
The event had 5 age groups JR11, JR13, JR15, JR17 JR19 with the top three students from each age group qualifying for the state final.
It was an astounding success with over 130 entrants on the day, including two current National champions in mountain biking.
The Dromana College Cycling team members performed admirably on the day with no less than four winners, one second place and two third places.
These students now qualify for the Victorian Schools State Final at Upper Beaconsfield in a couple of weeks.
